Our seaside cottage is located near Lubec, Maine. If you see a US map, go all the way to the eastern most point of the shore lines of the Atlantic Ocean. You’d find Lubec right on the border of Canada and the US. It’s a beautiful remote village with no frills. It’s the Real Maine, Real McCoy. My favorite spot is a long stretch of natural dune, called Sand Bar. (See maps below.) A few days ago, on a sunny day, I hiked the Sand Bar with my dogs.
わたしたちのセカンドハウスは、メイン州のLubecという海沿いの村の近くにあります。合衆国の地図を大西洋沿いにずっと北東に辿ってゆくと、いちばん東端のカナダとの国境沿いにその小さな村はあります。ここまで遠くに来ると、夏の盛りでも観光客の数は知れていて、まったく観光ズレしていない「本物のメイン州」が見つかります。わたしのお気に入りスポットは、Sand Bar と呼ばれる場所。細く長い砂丘が海に突き出している。すぐそこにカナダが見えている。下の地図では Bar Road とあたかもそこに「道路」が作られているような表示ですが、実際には、ここには「道」はありません。おそらく何千年も何万年も昔から、そこにそうしてあったように、ただ長い砂丘と浜が続いているだけです。数日前、お天気の良い日にワンコ達をつれて、ここを散歩してきました。

This beach is a mile-long. Canada is seen across the water. 2㎞ほども続く長い長いビーチ。海を挟んですぐ向こうには、カナダ領が見えている。A number of streams run through the vast natural salt marsh. It’s the home for hundreds of hundreds of wild migratory birds. サンド・バーと陸地の間には広大な海水湿地が広がり、水流がいくつも流れています。渡り鳥の宝庫。It was a beautiful sunny day; the sun was reflecting on the water. 太陽が高く昇り、海面に反射していた。Water is extremely cold, but Frankie walks fearlessly in the crystal-clear water. 海水は切れるように冷たいけれど、フランキーはかまわず海の中を歩きます。海は透き通っている。My 3 dogs love to play on the Sand Bar. ワンコらもSand Barで遊ぶのが大好き。For this time of the year, it’s warmer than usual, but the wind still gets very chilly. No one on the beach. 例年より暖かめですが、この季節になると海風は冷たく、ビーチには誰も来ません。Priscilla, the hunter, is sniffing around. プリシラちゃんはクンクンしっぱなし。During the summer, the dunes are covered with beach roses. The red fruits are rose hips. 夏になると砂丘はハマナスで覆われます。赤い実はローズヒップ。Zoolander, running free in the chilly wind, chasing birds. ズー君は鳥を追いかけ冷たい風の中を自由に駆け回ります。Back home. The sunset on the bay from my windows. 帰宅すると夕日がベイ（入り江）に沈みかけていた。
